MINERAL RIDGE - Meander Water customers will receive clearer water once a nearly $24 million project to replace six older water clarifiers with two new clarifiers is complete. The project will double the plant's capacity to filter solid materials out of the water.
The water district, formerly known as the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, takes water from the Meander Reservoir and uses the clarifiers to reduce the amount of solids that may be in the water to an amount that is less than 1 percent.
Solids in the reservoir include runoff from the reservoir's sides and bottom, such as silt, sand, leaves and other products that may get into the water.
The district sells water to member communities, including Youngstown, Niles and by special contract to McDonald. Those cities then serve surrounding areas such as Girard, Canfield, Mineral Ridge, Lordstown, Craig Beach and portions of 10 other townships.
Meander Reservoir is seven miles long, covers 2,010 acres with 40 miles of shoreline, and has a capacity of 11 billion gallons. District-owned land includes 5,500 acres enclosed by 35 miles of fence.
