Paying it forward

Diagnose and correct Brentley's craniosynostosis. The birth defect occurs when sutures -- fibrous connections between the bones in an infant's skull -- fuse together before the brain is done growing.

Infants with craniosynostosis (pronounced kray-nee-oh-sin-os-TOE-sis) have abnormally shaped heads. The condition can lead to increased pressure in the skull, which can cause developmental delays, seizures and blindness. A statistic cited in an article from American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists states that craniosynostosis occurs three to five times in every 10,000 births. Surgery corrects the head's shape and relieves pressure and gives the brain room to grow.

To get through the difficult time, the family relied on support from family and an online community of parents going through the same thing, they said.

Now, they're paying it forward. In March, Summer Ehmann co-founded Cranio Care Bears, a nonprofit that sends care packages of goodies to families throughout the world whose children are going into surgery for craniosynostosis.
