has any found a good low-cost solutions a a sludge problem in a 2002 VW Volkswagen Passat? ?

my mom has a 2002 VW passat. she had a warning light on, so brought it to the dealer. they say she may have a slugde problem...$2500 to fix...$400 to diagnose... they said that even with good oil change records, they MAY pay for it...but won't know till

I'm surprised that the dealer isn't trying to rack up warranty work so they can bill VW. Talk to the dealer. When they say they MAY pay for it, that means that they won't but want your work.
