Ford dispute with Navistar may have created Ohio plant opportunity
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Keeping a joint venture business together is always tough, but when the two sides end up suing each other, it's nearly impossible.
So analysts and truck dealers weren't too surprised when news came out that Ford plans to move its large commercial-truck business to Ohio. The United Auto Workers said last week that Ford's Avon Lake plant will begin making commercial trucks under a tentative agreement with the automaker.
Ford had been making the trucks under the Blue Diamond partnership with Navistar, parent company of International Truck and Engine Co. The companies created the 50-50 joint venture in Mexico in 2001 with Ford saying it wanted to tap the expertise of a company known for heavy-duty trucks and Navistar saying it wanted to work with a global leader in lighter commercial vehicles.
But the companies began feuding in 2006, each blaming the other for defective diesel engines used in many of Ford's larger pickups. The companies sued each other in 2007.
